Major Change in Direction

At our house there have been some major changes in the past recent months. We've all been shifting to a more healthy way of cooking and incorporating exercise into our daily lives. So, this morning, since it's a good time to make changes and start new things, I decided to make a few changes to my food/menu blog. This blog will now be a sort of chronicle of the changes we have made, changes we will make, and will hopefully give me courage to stay the course.

I've always been interested in eating healthy and have noticed that most of the current theories that prevail in society are a little lacking the logic department. Low fat diets, no meat, all protein, all dairy etc. You name it, it's been touted as the latest greatest way of losing weight. But let's face it, you can't live any of those ways! Nor are they healthy! So, in my years of raising our kids and feeding a very forgiving husband, I've looked for ways to be more healthy. More logical and down to earth ways. I've served fried tofu, (forget the tofu, the kids and The Dad hated it), changed from all white rice to all brown rice (very gradually), changed from all white pastas to mostly brown or whole grain pastas (even more gradually... The Dad really whines about brown pasta!), started raising our own chickens for their beautiful eggs, gone from grocery store meat to locally farm raised pork and locally grass fed beef. I am blessed to have a raw cow milk source that I absolutely know that the Lord brought my way. I get to buy a gallon of this wonderful milk every week. I have gradually incorporated more and more organic foods into our diets, I've stopped buying white sugar and have changed to Rapadura, Agave Syrup and raw local honey and of course stevia. Recently I've made my own kefir from our raw milk. It's very good made into a strawberry shake!

Mostly what I do is try to think about feeding my family foods in their natural state. Foods that the Lord gave us in their original capacity. Now this is not to say that we don't all enjoy our junk food! But we're trying for moderation in all things, junk food included! So, with the beginning of this year, and using some new tools that my dear husband has given me. I will be chronicling our journey of health!

Starting with today, I will say that in the food dehydrator this morning went some soy bean that Daughter T sprouted for a few days. She will be drying them and then making them into a powder that you can put in shakes. Should be way better for you than the soy isolate protien stuff that you can buy at the store. I also whirled up four bananas into a mush and am drying it as fruit leather! Yum!
